Current location:

Aughrim, Co. Galway, Republic of Ireland

This caesium gradiometer survey was carried out as a supplement to the main survey undertaken on the N6 Galway to Ballinasloe road scheme. The area is of particular interest as the important Battle of Aughrim engulfed the village in 1691. The Jacobite encampment lay near the proposed route of the new road and a key retreat route crossed it.

Remnants of former cultivation and field boundaries were found but no features likely to be associated with the conflict.
