ArchaeoPhysica were initially asked to investigate an area which lay close to the Roman fort at Parton and was thought to have potential for settlement remains as well as possibly containing the old road.

Prior to this project, there had been some queries raised within the county regarding how useful geophysical survey could be - results of some previous surveys (not ours!) had been less informative than expected and some were apparently of questionable use.

The magnetic and electrical resistance data complemented each other and a range of features were identified, including the old road that ran past Moresby Hall, though no trace of a settlement. The geophysical results were well correlated by the trenches excavated weeks later by Oxford Archaeology North.

Following the success of these surveys, further geophysical survey was commissioned in nearby fields. Here we found little apart from a few pits, ditches and land drains.
