Current location:

Snowdonia National Park, Wales

The RCAHMW Uplands Initiative Projects have been responsible for the discovery and basic recording of thousands of archaeological monuments over the last decade. Each year areas of the Welsh highlands are walked and in 2005 ArchaeoPhysica was commissioned to cover a total of 60 sq km in two regions of Snowdonia.

Many pastoral remains exist, such as shepherd's huts. There are also prehistoric settlements and field systems scattered over the hillsides, sharing the slopes with slate quarrying and copper mines. A database containing the recorded information was made. In addition the use of GIS enabled patterns in the distribution of monuments to be studied, with other factors such as aspect, intervisibility etc. Overall, more than 800 monuments were recorded and over 1000 photographs taken.
