Geonics EM31

This instrument was designed to measure the electrical conductivity of the soil to depths of a few meters using the quadrature response of the ground to an electromagnetic wave. It also measures the in-phase component, analogous to magnetic susceptibility which makes it ideally suited to the detection of deep metallic features. It contains a transmitter & a receiver coil 3.6m apart

A primary use for this instrument is ground water mapping, examination of drainage within fields to assess where water is being trapped. Another use is for the detection of buried waste such as illegal dumping, landfill, etc.
