Geometrics G858 Caesium Magnetometer

The caesium magnetometer from Geometrics has the reputation of being one of the best instruments available & is the workhorse of many geophysical companies. The console is probably the most advanced of any magnetometer, but of course all this entails a much higher purchase cost than non-caesium magnetometers!

It has two independent measurement channels allowing a wide range of sensor configurations. At normal walking pace, sampling at 10Hz, it has a sensitivity of about 0.03nT which increases to 0.01nT at 5Hz. In addition its use as a pair of total field magnetometers rather than a vertical gradiometer allows the full amplitude of anomalies from buried sources to be measured. Overall, the signal to noise ratio is therefore far higher than for other types of magnetometers & the data is of far higher quality as a result.

To maximise the benefits of this technology the sensors must be kept stable at a fixed height above the ground; to achieve this many surveyors, including ArchaeoPhysica, use wheeled carts.
