Bartington G601-2 Dual Fluxgate Gradiometer

The 601 is one of the newest fluxgate gradiometers around & is different from others as it was designed to be dual channel instrument. The fluxgates are 1.0m apart which provides a slightly better response than shorter instruments & it is fairly easy to use. In most other respects it is, however, very similar to the Geoscan Research FM36 (or the dual FM256 version). It takes a fixed number of readings along lines & the surveyor must walk at exactly the right pace to achieve correct measurement positions.

It features a novel set up mechanism designed to remove any fixed offset amplitude between the two channels which involves rotating the instrument on a non-magnetic tripod to ensure the measurements from each channel at the same location are equal.
